Best Membership Website Builder 2026: Mighty Networks vs Podia, Honestly

Choosing a membership website builder is really two decisions wearing one coat. First: is your membership community-led — people pay to be in the room with each other — or content-led, where they pay for your courses and library and the comments section is a bonus? Second: what's the total take-rate once platform fees stack on card processing? Answer those two and the platform mostly picks itself.

Mighty Networks keeps our top slot for 2026, but it wears more asterisks than it used to. Its entry price roughly doubled in the plan restructure, and its transaction fees never reach zero. The ledger, in full:

What a membership site actually needs

The baseline kit is the same everywhere: gated content behind a login, recurring billing that retries failed cards, an email channel to the members you already have, and a take-rate that doesn't quietly eat a tenth of revenue. Past the baseline, the community-led versus content-led fork decides everything else.

Community-led means member profiles, discussion spaces, events and livestreams are the product — churn is controlled by relationships between members, not by your publishing pace. Content-led means a library, courses and downloads carry the value, and members mostly interact with you. The distinction matters because community tooling is genuinely hard to build, so platforms that have it charge for it — and if you don't need it, you're paying for someone else's roadmap.

Mighty Networks: the pick, held to the numbers

The Mighty Networks lineup after the restructure: Launch $79/mo, Scale $179/mo, Growth $354/mo, and Mighty Pro on custom pricing for branded apps. Annual billing is pitched as two months free — $950/yr on Launch — and there's a 14-day trial. Month-to-month pricing isn't displayed the same way; the $950 math implies around $95/mo at last check.

Two honesty notes this desk won't soften. One: the old cheap entry plan was eliminated, so the price of admission roughly doubled — anyone quoting the platform from a 2024 review is quoting a product that no longer exists. Two: the transaction fee on member payments — 2% on Launch, 1% on Scale, 0.5% on Growth and Pro — never reaches 0% at any price, and it rides on top of Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢. At $20,000/mo of member revenue on Growth, that's still $100/mo in platform fees over the $354 subscription.

So why does it keep the slot? Because for community-led memberships the alternatives aren't close. Spaces, native events, livestreams, member discovery — the things that make members renew for each other — exist here at a depth generalists and course platforms don't reach. You're overpaying only if you didn't need them.

Podia: the content-led undercut

If members pay for your material rather than each other's company, Podia is the sharper deal. Mover is $42/mo annual ($49 monthly) with a 5% transaction fee and a 100-subscriber email cap; Shaker is $84 ($99) with 0% fees and 500 subscribers; Earthquaker is $150 ($179) with 0% fees, 1,000 subscribers and unlimited products. Every plan includes the website, community "spaces," courses and digital downloads; Stripe or PayPal processing at 2.9% + 30¢ is separate. No free plan, but a 30-day trial.

Podia's own catch: Mover is a demo, not a business plan. Its 5% cut costs more than the upgrade once revenue passes about $840/mo (5% of $840 is the $42 price gap to Shaker), and the 100-contact email cap arrives before your hundredth member does. Price Shaker as the real entry — and notice that at $84/mo with 0% platform fees, it undercuts Mighty's Launch on both sticker and take-rate.

The Squarespace and Wix member-area routes

Already running a site you like? Squarespace sells memberships on every paid plan, but its digital-content transaction fees ladder by tier: 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, 0% only on Advanced — which costs $99/mo. Processing sits on top at 2.9% down to 2.5% + 30¢ depending on plan. True zero platform fee on Squarespace costs more than Podia's Shaker.

On Wix, member areas install free but charging members requires Core at $29/mo or higher, and at last check recurring-subscription sales below the Business Elite tier may have carried an extra 2–4% platform fee — verify that line on your own plan before you build on it. Either generalist route suits a members-only archive bolted to an existing brand site; neither gives you real community machinery.

What it really costs per month

Worked example: 100 members at $25/mo — $2,500 of monthly revenue, 100 card payments. Stripe takes 2.9% + 30¢, so $72.50 + $30 = $102.50 on every route. Then:

  • Mighty Networks Launch: $79 plan + 2% fee ($50) + $102.50 processing = $231.50/mo — a 9.3% all-in take-rate.
  • Podia Shaker: $84 + $0 + $102.50 = $186.50/mo — $45 a month cheaper for the same revenue.
  • Podia Mover: $42 + 5% ($125) + $102.50 = $269.50/mo — the cheapest sticker is the dearest plan, and its 100-contact email cap is already full.
  • Squarespace Core: $29 + 5% ($125) + processing ≈ $256.50/mo; Advanced at $99 with 0% fees lands near $191.50/mo.

Read the column, not the stickers: at this size Podia Shaker wins the arithmetic outright, and Mighty's $45/mo premium is the price of its community machinery. Pay it knowingly or not at all.

Mistakes membership builders make

  • Picking the platform before picking community-led or content-led. That fork is the whole decision; everything after it is price-shopping.
  • Comparing subscriptions and ignoring take-rate. A 2% platform fee on a growing membership outspends the plan gap within a year.
  • Starting on Podia Mover with real members. The 5% cut and the 100-contact email ceiling both punish exactly the growth you're hoping for.
  • Paying a year upfront before validating the offer. Every platform here runs a 14–30 day trial; use it with ten founding members first.
  • Forcing a niche use-case into a general platform. Fan subscriptions for a band, for instance, are cheaper inside a musician-first tool — see our musician website builder guide.

Membership website builder FAQ

Does Mighty Networks still have a cheap entry plan?

No. The old low-cost Community Plan was eliminated in the restructure; entry is now Launch at $79/mo, with Scale at $179, Growth at $354 and Mighty Pro on custom pricing. Annual billing works out to two months free, and month-to-month ran around $95/mo at last check.

Is Podia cheaper than Mighty Networks?

For content-led memberships, usually yes. Podia Shaker at $84/mo annual charges 0% platform fees, while Mighty's Launch at $79/mo adds a 2% fee on every member payment — so at $2,500/mo of revenue, Podia comes out about $45/mo cheaper. Mighty earns its premium only when you need its community features.

What fees do membership platforms charge on top of the subscription?

Two layers: card processing (typically Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢) and a platform transaction fee. Mighty Networks charges 2% on Launch falling to 0.5% on Growth — never 0%. Podia charges 5% on Mover and 0% above it. Squarespace ladders from 7% on Basic to 0% only on its $99/mo Advanced plan.

Can I run a membership site on Squarespace or Wix?

Yes, for a gated-content archive attached to an existing site. Squarespace sells memberships on every paid plan but takes 7% to 1% until the $99/mo Advanced tier; Wix needs Core at $29/mo to charge members and may add its own fee on recurring sales below the top tiers. Neither offers real community tooling.
