Best Restaurant Website Builder (2026): Square Online, the Fee Math, and the Specialist Trap

A restaurant website builder has one job most builders fail at: getting a hungry person from Google to a menu, an address and an order button in under ten seconds. Hours, menu, ordering — that is nearly the whole site for most visitors, and the builder you pick decides whether those three things cost you $0 a month or $479 a month.

We put Square Online at the top for this trade, and the reasons are mostly about money — including some fee math the pricing pages don't volunteer. Here is the full accounting.

What a restaurant site actually needs

Strip away the agency talk and a restaurant site is a short checklist. Hold every builder against this list before you compare a single price:

  • A menu in real HTML, readable on a phone — not a PDF that forces pinch-zooming
  • Hours, address and phone number visible without scrolling
  • Online ordering for pickup and delivery, or at minimum a clean link to wherever you take orders
  • A reservations button — usually a link out to OpenTable, Resy or your Google Business Profile, since almost no website builder runs table management itself
  • A handful of photos that load fast, and hours that match your Google listing — diners check Google first

Notice what is not on the list: a blog, an events calendar, a newsletter popup. Nice later; irrelevant now.

The top pick: Square Online, and the free-tier reality

Square restructured its plans on October 6, 2025: Square Free at $0, Square Plus at $49/mo per location, Square Premium at $149/mo per location. The Square Online free plan is not a teaser — it is a complete store with unlimited items, menus with online ordering, pickup, delivery and shipping, plus SEO tools. Two genuine limits: your site lives on a yourname.square.site subdomain with 'Powered by Square' branding, and connecting a custom domain requires a paid plan.

The real price is in the processing. On the free plan, online orders are charged 3.3% + 30¢ each — a rate Square quietly raised from 2.9% + 30¢ on January 13, 2026. Paid plans process online orders at 2.9% + 30¢, in-person cards run 2.6% + 15¢ on the free tier, and ACH is 1%. So 'free' means you pay per sale, with a 0.4-point surcharge over the paid plans. We work the crossover math below.

The generalist route: Wix

If your ordering already lives with a delivery platform, or you take orders by phone, a straight brochure site is a legitimate choice — and Wix does it with more design control. The Light plan at $17/mo on annual billing (or $24 month-to-month) gets you a custom domain, no ads, contact forms and menu pages you can style however you like. The catch that matters for this trade: Light accepts zero online payments. The moment you want orders through your own site, you need Core at $29/mo — and at that point Square's $0 plan starts looking sharper, since Wix still is not a restaurant ordering system without extra apps bolted on.

The specialist route: BentoBox and Owner.com

BentoBox — now part of Clover under Fiserv — is the hospitality-agency option, and it is custom-quoted. Trackers put websites at around $119/mo for a basic build at last check, around $279/mo for Foundations, and around $479/mo for Signature. Ordering is where the meter really runs: Takeout & Delivery starts around $49/mo plus 99¢ per order plus 3% card processing. Work that example through: a restaurant doing 300 direct orders a month at a $40 average ticket pays roughly $49 + $297 in order fees + $360 in processing — north of $700 a month on the 'cheap' ordering plan.

Owner.com sells a marketing-heavy package: around $249/mo plus a 5% per-order fee at last check, or a flat plan around $499/mo with no commission, with an implementation fee around $1,000 and roughly $299/mo per additional location. Read the fine print on 'commission-free': on the standard plan, guests are charged a 5% 'order support fee' at checkout on every direct order. The commission does not vanish — it moves onto your customers' receipts.

Specialists earn their bill when direct-order volume is high and somebody on staff has time to feed the marketing machine. For an independent spot doing modest direct volume, the arithmetic rarely closes.

What it really costs per month

Take a hypothetical neighborhood spot doing 200 online orders a month at a $30 average — $6,000 in monthly online volume:

  • Square Free: $0 software + 3.3% of $6,000 ($198) + 200 × 30¢ ($60) = $258/mo, all of it processing
  • Square Plus: $49 software + 2.9% of $6,000 ($174) + $60 = $283/mo — more than the free plan at this volume
  • Wix Core plus a third-party ordering app: $29/mo before the ordering vendor's own fees begin
  • BentoBox with ordering: roughly $700+/mo at 300 orders, per the worked example above

The crossover for Square: the 0.4-point surcharge equals the $49 plan fee at $12,250 of monthly online volume. Below that, stay free — unless the custom domain and unbranded site are worth $49/mo to you on their own, which for an established name they may be.

Mistakes restaurants make with their websites

  • Uploading the print menu as a PDF. It is the single most common failure on restaurant sites, and it costs orders.
  • Signing a specialist contract before measuring direct-order volume. A $479/mo website needs a lot of covers to justify itself.
  • Taking 'commission-free' at face value. Always ask who pays the per-order fee — you, or the guest at checkout.
  • Forgetting the per-location multiplier. Square Plus, BentoBox and Owner.com all price per location, so a second site doubles the bill.
  • Signing a multi-year POS contract mainly to get the bundled website that comes with it.

Square Online wins for restaurants on the arithmetic, not on charm. If you run a different kind of business — or a second one on the side — our rundown of the best website builder by industry covers ten trades with the same fee-first approach.

Frequently asked questions

Is Square Online really free for restaurants?

Yes — the free plan includes unlimited items, menus, online ordering, pickup and delivery at $0/mo. You pay through processing at 3.3% + 30¢ per online order, your site sits on a square.site subdomain with Square branding, and a custom domain requires a paid plan at $49/mo per location.

How much does BentoBox cost?

BentoBox is quote-based. At last check, trackers put basic websites around $119/mo, larger packages around $279–$479/mo, and Takeout & Delivery from around $49/mo plus 99¢ per order and 3% card processing. A 300-order month at a $40 average ticket works out past $700 all-in.

Can a restaurant website builder handle reservations?

Generally no — reservations run on dedicated platforms. The standard setup on any builder, Square included, is a prominent button linking to OpenTable, Resy or your Google Business Profile booking. Budget for a reservation platform separately if walk-in demand justifies one.

When should a restaurant upgrade off Square's free plan?

Two triggers: you want your own domain without Square branding, or your online volume passes about $12,250 a month — the point where the free plan's 0.4-point processing surcharge starts costing more than the $49/mo Plus plan.
